TIMING IS EVERYTHING.
This photo was taken on my first day of teaching at Beijing Broadcasting Institute. It was Fall of 1994.
When the Chinese Government invited me to be their First Communication Specialist at Beijing Broadcasting Institute-fifteen miles from Beijing- I quickly accepted. I'd recently been fired, I had no home, no income, and the only certainty I wouldn't starve....was my monthly food stamps-coupon book, worth thirty dollars.
Within twenty four hours of that important phone call, I was on an Air China Flight to Beijing. My monthly teachers' pay was the equivalent of 354 American Dollars, and included a complimentary Chinese Apartment(one-room, fifth floor walk-up, without heat or air) and a Chinese driver and car-- once a week-- for shopping.
The Alternative: Stay in America-- without money or a place to live-- and continue to face lengthy interrogations from special counsel, Ken Starr and his group of political attorneys; continue receiving serious and intrusive monitoring from private investigators; and continue to be pursued and bird-dogged by the gutter-minded American Media.
I consider it fair for you to ask obvious questions like: Where were family members when I was all- alone? Where were those who supposedly loved me while I was being "plucked like a chicken" by Hillary, the Democratic Party, and the Liberal Media? And, most importantly, why wasn't a family-member or close friend trying to help me when I had no money and no home?
I can't answer for friends but I know all-about my family. The cold-hearted and true facts are: My Mother was in Arkansas, salivating over her power to tell everyone who either called on the phone or knocked on her door--- that I was a "common street slut, a thief, and a liar."
My youngest daughter, named for my mother, was in California, responding to inquiring phone calls, eager to support her grandmother's ugly declarations. I learned, years later, that my daughter told the media, investigators, government officials--- that "Yes, she's a bad Mother. Yes, she's lazy , self-centered, and also a liar".
And, the spiteful and controlling bully, set to marry my oldest daughter, threatened to cancel the marriage if his soon-to-be wife, helped her mother.
No, there wasn't any support from my family...only ugliness. Of course, at the same time, I learned that the ex-family was slandering my name and reputation at every opportunity....which was certainly no surprise. So--- whatever you may think of China, its government, or its people--- China was there when I desperately needed a life-line.
Timing is everything. I'll never know exactly why the Chinese Government issued an invitation for me to teach in their country at that most critical point in my life. I recognized it, instantly, as a blessing, not a coincidence.
Regardless of our status, color, nationality, or religion....God has complete control of this world. Like the song says "He has the whole world...in his hands."
God never doubted I'd make the right decision.
