CROOKS/SCAMMERS LEAVE A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH!

 

After moving to Hot Springs Village, a neighbor invited me to eat at a small, hole-in-the-wall place called MICKEY’S.  She said the barbeque sandwiches at this little “joint” were outstanding.

When we pulled into Mickey’s parking lot---there were several cars but it wasn’t crowded. Mickey’s could only be described as a “plain and simple” old shack; nothing special. When it came to “eating out”, I was always more-concerned with cleanliness than “curb appeal”. I’d say my pulled-pork sandwich with slaw and sauce on-the-side was better than most. Since I’m not a big meat eater, I simply “chalked it up” as a future “possibility”.

I’ve never been a big fan of Hot Springs. For me, there’s always been a certain “gypsy” feel to the downtown---almost like a cheap, one-night-stand atmosphere that lacks depth or traditional quality.

 Because Hot Springs is the County Seat for Garland County, I’ve had no choice but visit Hot Springs for such routine reasons as property taxes, driver's license renewal, and other necessary reasons-- from time to time.

Each time I drive to Hot Springs, the highway carries me past Mickey’s. So--on the way home, I've sometimes stopped at the drive-through window to get a sandwich-- for later.

I seldom carry cash.  Instead I use my debit card for any and all transactions…then keep track of my expenditures online.  I probably visited Mickey’s a total of six times and even then---I only used their drive-in-window. My order was always the same: one small, pulled-pork sandwich with sauce and slaw on the side. (no fries, chips, not even a drink). Each time the waitress would take my order, then return to "ring it up” and casually ask "Do you need a receipt”?  Knowing I wouldn’t need it for a "return" or "refund"....I automatically replied "No." The first time it happened, it caught me by surprise since…I’d never been asked that question but…on such a small and simple transaction…it didn’t seem important. Each time I ordered at the window-- the waitress would ask if I needed a receipt.

 The first time I visited Mickey's drive-in window—one of the waitresses noticed my big dog, Cubby Dog, in the back seat.  When she came back with my order, she handed me an extra sack with some scraps of meat and several large dog bones for Cubby!  She said there was "no charge" which made both me and Cubby Dog, very happy.

After that visit, each time we went to Mickey's... Cubby received a large sack of scraps and bones. Each time I offered to pay for them I was told: "Oh, no! They're free!  We love Dogs and keep our bones and scraps just-for-them!”

Last month, checking my debit card transactions, I was shocked to see my "Mickey" charges were high....and higher! My usual, small order should have NEVER been more than five dollars yet---my debit card showed charges that ranged from nine dollars to nineteen dollars!   That ended my trips to Mickey's.

Apparently, free scraps and bones for my dog were nothing more than enticements-- meant to soften my heart for future “tips”.  Most disappointing to me---there were 3 different waitresses who'd worked the "window" so all three were in on “the scam".  I tried to contact the owner but never received a call-back.  I also visited “Mickey’s” website--- attempted to leave a REVIEW but---it was not “accepted”.

 I’ll always wonder how many other customers felt “sick” after eating at MICKEY’S.
