SOME OF MY DEAREST TREASURES HAVE BEEN RESCUED---FROM THE TRASH.

TOO MANY "BABY" TREES ARE IGNORED AT CHRISTMAS TIME. WALKING THROUGH KROGERS--TWO DAYS INTO THE NEW YEAR--- 2009--- I CERTAINLY DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING "LIVE" ON MY GROCERY LIST!

IN JUST TWO DAYS, I WOULD BE BACK ON THE HIGHWAY, COMMUTING TO MY DAILY TEACHING JOB. I WANTED TO HAVE THE KITCHEN WELL-STOCKED WITH FOOD SO I WOULDN'T NEED TO STOP FOR GROCERIES AT THE END OF A LONG, COMPLICATED DAY.

WALKING PAST THE FLORAL DEPARTMENT, I STOPPED TO ADMIRE SEVERAL FRESH GARDENIA BUSHES AND SNIFF THEIR CLASSIC FRAGRANCE AND---THAT'S WHEN I SAW THE SALES LADY DROP THE LITTLE PINE TREE IN A TRASH CAN!!! WHAT?!?!? THE PLANT WAS GREEN AND ALIVE SO---WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?!?!?!

IN RESPONSE TO MY IMMEDIATE QUESTIONS---THE SALES PERSON SAID " IT"S BEEN HERE FOR MORE THAN A MONTH. IT WAS SUPPOSE TO SELL AS A LIVE CHRISTMAS TREE, THINKING SOMEONE WHO LIVED IN A SMALL SPACE COULD ADD SOME DECORATIONS AND ENJOY THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT AND--OF THE EIGHT WE RECEIVED--EACH ONE SOLD EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE. WE MARKED IT DOWN BUT---NO ONE BOUGHT IT. EVEN FIVE DAYS AGO, OUR MANAGER MARKED IT DOWN TO ONE DOLLAR BUT NO ONE GAVE IT A SECOND LOOK SO---IT'S TIME TO THROW IT AWAY."

I QUICKLY SAID "I'LL TAKE IT!". THE SALES PERSON SAID "EVEN IF I TAKE IT OUT OF THE TRASH, I STILL MUST CHARGE YOU ONE DOLLAR. KROGER'S POLICY STATES WE CAN'T GIVE ANYTHING AWAY FROM INSIDE THE STORE." I PLACED ONE DOLLAR ON THE COUNTER, REACHED INTO THE TRASH CAN, AND PICKED UP MY NEW FOREVER- CHRISTMAS TREE- FRIEND.

MY NORFOLK PINE AND I HAVE BEEN TOGETHER NOW---FOR MORE THAN TWELVE YEARS. IT SPENDS ITS SPRINGS, SUMMERS, AND FALLS, OUTSIDE. BUT, BECAUSE IT CAN'T ENDURE TEMPERATURES BELOW 35 DEGREES, IT MUST SPEND THE WINTER MONTHS INSIDE---WITH LOTS OF LIGHT, WATER, AND DAILY SHOWERS. MY TREE IS TRULY ONE OF NATURE'S MOST MAGNIFICENT CREATIONS.

AND THIS YEAR--BECAUSE IT'S GROWN ANOTHER FOOT IN HEIGHT---IT MUST BE PLACED IN THE GARAGE BUT---THANKFULLY---THERE'S A LARGE WINDOW WAITING TO SHARE LOTS OF LIGHT WITH MY FOREVER-CHRISTMAS TREE-FRIEND!!!!

YES, IF I HAD ENDLESS AMOUNTS OF MONEY, I"D DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO SAVE ALL THE "THROW-AWAY" PEOPLE, ANIMALS, AND ALL OF NATURE.

I STILL BELIEVE IN SHARING LOVE.
