ONLY IN CHINA----
HEY! IS TODAY'S LUNCH---- DEAD OR ALIVE?!?!?!?
China’s Broadcasting Institute paid me a monthly salary of three hundred fifty American dollars. They also provided me with a fifth floor, one-room, unheated/un-air-conditioned apartment, which included a Chinese “bathroom.” Trust me, it was better than nothing!
In addition to my salary and "furnished" apartment, I also received a free pass to eat two meals every day in the Institute’s nearby Cafeteria. The one and only time I visited the school cafeteria, the manager served me what he called “a rare Chinese delicacy”---a bowl of cold rice teeming with lively-silk worms. I watched the silk worms slowly climb my chopsticks, obviously friendly and eager to make my acquaintance but---the very thought of inviting one inside my mouth---was enough to make me feel faint.
I left the cafeteria that day after permanently-losing my appetite for "Chinese Food"--and--I never returned to the cafeteria again. Free Food is worthless if you can't/won't eat it.
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE CHINA AND THE CHINESE PEOPLE BUT---our culinary tastes will never have anything in common.
