MANY OF MY TREASURES WERE RESCUED---FROM THE TRASH.

TOO MANY "BABY" TREES ARE IGNORED AT CHRISTMAS TIME BECAUSE THEY’RE TOO SMALL OR NOT THE PERFECT SHAPE, OR THEIR BRANCHES ARE SIMPLY TO WEAK TO HOLD DECORATIONS. WALKING THROUGH KROGERS--TWO DAYS INTO THE NEW YEAR--- 2009--- I WAS RELIEVED THAT CHRISTMAS WAS OVER—UNTIL NEXT YEAR.

IN JUST TWO DAYS, I WOULD BE BACK ON THE HIGHWAY, COMMUTING TO MY DAILY TEACHING JOB. TODAY’S “MISSION” WAS TO MAKE-SURE MY KITCHEN WAS WELL-STOCKED WITH FOOD…. SO…AT THE END OF A LONG TEACHING DAY, I WOULDN'T NEED TO STOP FOR GROCERIES!

WALKING PAST THE FLORAL DEPARTMENT, I STOPPED TO ADMIRE SEVERAL FRESH GARDENIA BUSHES AND SNIFF THEIR CLASSIC FRAGRANCE AND---THAT'S WHEN I SAW THE SALES LADY DROP THE LITTLE PINE TREE--STILL COVERED WITH LITTLE RED BOWS--IN A TRASH CAN!!! WHAT?!?!? THE PLANT WAS GREEN AND ALIVE SO---WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?!?!?!

IN RESPONSE TO MY IMMEDIATE QUESTIONS---THE SALES PERSON SAID "IT"S BEEN HERE FOR MORE THAN A MONTH. IT WAS SUPPOSE TO SELL AS A LIVE CHRISTMAS TREE, THINKING SOMEONE WHO LIVED IN A SMALL SPACE COULD ADD SOME DECORATIONS AND ENJOY THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT AND--OF THE EIGHT WE RECEIVED—THEY ALL SOLD EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE. WE MARKED IT DOWN BUT---NO ONE BOUGHT IT. FIVE DAYS AGO, OUR MANAGER MARKED IT DOWN TO ONE DOLLAR BUT NO ONE GAVE IT A SECOND LOOK SO---IT'S TIME TO THROW IT AWAY."

I QUICKLY SAID "I'LL TAKE IT." THE SALES PERSON SAID "EVEN IF I TAKE IT OUT OF THE TRASH, I STILL MUST CHARGE YOU ONE DOLLAR. KROGER'S POLICY STATES WE CAN'T GIVE ANYTHING AWAY FROM INSIDE THE STORE." I PLACED ONE DOLLAR ON THE COUNTER, REACHED INTO THE TRASH CAN, AND PICKED UP MY FOREVER- CHRISTMAS TREE AND--NEW FRIEND.

MY NORFOLK PINE AND I HAVE BEEN TOGETHER NOW---FOR MORE THAN TWELVE YEARS. IT SPENDS ITS SPRINGS, SUMMERS, AND FALLS—OUTSIDE—ON MY DECK. BUT, BECAUSE IT CAN'T ENDURE TEMPERATURES BELOW 35 DEGREES, IT MUST SPEND THE WINTER MONTHS INSIDE---WITH LOTS OF LIGHT, WATER, DAILY MISTINGS, AND ME.   MY TREE IS TRULY ONE OF NATURE'S MOST MAGNIFICENT CREATIONS—AND I LOVE IT.

THIS YEAR--BECAUSE IT'S GROWN TO ALMOST EIGHT FEET—MY BEAUTIFUL TREE IS TOO-TALL FOR THE SUN ROOM’S SLANTED ROOFLINE AND IS NOW ENJOYING THE LARGE WINDOW IN THE DINING ROOM—OVERLOOKING THE DECK.

JUST IMAGINE--- IF I HAD ENDLESS AMOUNTS OF MONEY--- I COULD SAVE ALL THE "THROW-AWAY" PEOPLE, ABANDONED ANIMALS, AND--- ALL OF NATURE'S BEAUTIES.  REGARDLESS OF LIMITED FUNDS---I WILL NEVER STOP SHARING MY LOVE.

SIMPLY, SALLY
